What are some quotes from your favorite movies?
Or even books – I care not.
Ok, let’s hear those quotes! I love movies, and the memorable ones, they leave a mark on us, don’t they? We love for “story” in any form to tell us something. A bit of wisdom, a confirmation of what we already believe, or something we don’t want to hear. Humans have used story to communicate ideas for eons.
The Epic of Gilgamesh
The epic is often regarded as the earliest surviving great work of literature. And since that time and maybe even before we have considered the art of storytelling as something valuable.
So, I will start by listing some of my favorites, then you tell me yours, I’d love to hear them!
Merlin from Excalibur
Arthur: Which is the greatest quality of knighthood? Courage? Compassion? Loyalty? Humility? What do you say, Merlin?
Merlin: Hmm? Ah. Ah. Ah, the greatest. Uh, well, they blend, like the metals we mix to make a good sword.
Arthur: No poetry. Just a straight answer. Which is it?
Merlin: All right, then. Truth. That’s it. Yes. It must be truth above all. When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. You should know that.
From the same movie
Merlin: For it is the doom of men that they forget.
Sometimes, a one-liner just flat out entertains us. As this one from The 13th Warrior.
Herger the Joyous: See to your friend, he was a brave man.
Here is some context for that scene.
One of my all-time favorite movie quotes
Comes from A River Runs Through It – if you’ve never seen this movie, you should. It is excellent!
“Now, nearly all those I loved and did not understand in my youth are dead, even Jessie. But I still reach out to them. Of course, now I am too old to be much of a fisherman and now I usually fish the big waters alone. Although, some friends think I shouldn’t. But when I am alone in the half-light of the canyon, all existence seems to fade to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.”
Of course, you know I have to have Lord of the Rings quotes.
Right? Yeah? Uh huh..
Gandalf to Frodo: Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.
From the same movie
Gandalf: All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.
Some are just face palming good.
Remember Commando? Arnold’s over the top action movie?
Cindy: What’d you do with Sully?
Col. John Matrix: I let him go.
I could go on and on but then this post would be so long.
Now, tell me, what are your favorite movie quotes? Which ones inspire you, which ones make you laugh, which ones tell you something about yourself?
