A snippet from The Darkness Rising, the sequel to The Bloodstone Reckoning

This is the Legend of Lake Wifyst, as told to Tabitha Millhouse by Wulfbyre, son of Xavielord, prince of Finavoré.

“As the legend goes, the god Galach had many wives and among them was Fyrgen, a fierce storm witch. She held the god’s favor as his most beloved. Galach’s other wives though bore him children, all but Fyrgen. It seemed she was barren. No child did she bear.  After years of trying every remedy she knew, nothing worked. Fyrgen soon fell out of favor with Galach and despair clutched at her. His wife, Cyme the Splendid, had borne a son to him, Ealbald he was called. He grew tall and fair. Galach favored him above all others.

Fyrgen was filled with envy and decided to trick Ealbald.

She baked sweet bread laced with hemlock and using a charm she appeared to him disguised as his mother. Fyrgen led him to a lake beyond the god’s mountain. Unbeknown to her, one of the god’s ravens had followed them. Once at the lake she bade Ealbald to eat of the bread. And he did eat and soon fell ill and died. Cyme found him and such was her grief she threw herself into the Sundering Deep and drowned.

Galach, having lost both his most favored son and wife, sought comfort from Fyrgen.

At last she had the favor she so desired until the raven told Galach the truth of what had happened to his son. Fyrgen, trembling before his wrath, cried out for mercy, admitting the deed. Explaining her plight did no good for Galach would not be consoled in the face of such treachery. He bound Fyrgen to the bottom of the lake where Ealbald had died, dubbing it Lake Wifyst, Lake of the Storm Witch. She is forever punished for her crime. Galach proclaimed that once a year, Fyrgen could rise to breathe, during the month of Aasa. When Fyrgen comes up to breathe her fury and wrath create the great storms that come during the month.”
