A text from bro.

I received a text from my brother, and it read thus: “I guess my mind operates a little strangely. But when he’s not chasing Hobbits, stabbing them with blades, or leading an army to raze weakened cities and commit genocide, what does the Witch-King of Angmar do with his spare time? How does he spend a lazy Saturday afternoon?”

To which my response was: “Right? It’s the same for Darth Vader, what does he do? Watch a bit of Pod Racing? Drink himself stupid? How does he eat?”

Of course, you know, I can’t go a single post it seems without talking about Lord of the Rings. But here we are, you know, the bad guy has been set up. He’s the Witch King of Angmar. The right hand of the devil himself. Darth Vader is much the same but with a there is a difference.

Ghost in the Machine?

For all intents and purposes, the Witch King is a spirit from what I understand. And so, what is a spirit gonna do in its spare time? For me it’s the first time this question has ever come up. Does he like fishing? Spider hunting? Does he just sit around and make sure his armor is black enough for the evil deeds he’s bound to commit?

But Darth Vader is, from what we are told, is still human, though Obi Wan said he was “more machine now, than man.” So, there we have it, he’s still a man. But! Oh, my nerdy friends this will twist your gut. How in the heck does he eat? Remember when he asked Luke to take off his helmet and Luke says, “But you’ll die.” Did the guy have IV’s? Did he drink his meals?

We never see Darth Vader eating!

Granted there isn’t many times we see any of them eating but they’re humans, who can breathe without that awesome black helmet to keep them alive. So, we assume they eat! Right? Does he draw his energy from the Dark Side? Maybe that’s why he keeps saying you don’t know the power of the Dark Side. We have cookies! Ok, he didn’t say the cookies part, but it could be implied. But maybe, just maybe, he draws his food from the Force.

darth vader, eating, table, star wars

There is some stuff out there that implies that he eats.

There is talk of some kind of paste, and feeding tubes, etc. but they never show it to us in the movies.

Is this really important to know?

I’m not sure but it makes for some fun discussion. I mean he didn’t take a drink of anything either. I’m not sure I want to exist in a world where I can’t drink some hard cider or ale.

It makes you wonder. Well it makes me wonder.

The bad guys always have major flaws, I just didn’t think that not eating would be one of them.

Back to the Witch-King, I wonder if he just resides in the ethereal plane when he’s not manifested physically as the Witch-King?

Who are some other characters that are missing some vital info?

Cheers,

Michael Wigington
